Xanadu Luxury Villas and Retreat is a testament to the boundless vision and creativity of its owner, Eileen. Born in the Congo, raised in Zambia, and later moved to Norway during her teenage years, Eileen's journey from diverse cultural landscapes infused her with a unique perspective and passion for design. Despite not having formal architectural training, her keen eye for shape, height, and spatial harmony guided the creation of Xanadu from the ground up.
Eileens vision for Xanadu Luxury Villas and Retreat was born from a deep-seated desire to create a space that breathes with nature and embodies the essence of tranquility.
Every element of Xanadu was meticulously crafted using locally available products to achieve a harmonious blend of energy and serenity, allowing guests to feel the soul of the place and appreciate the living elements that bring it to life.
‘The stonework at Xanadu, created by Mersons, took years to perfect. My main handyman, with the patience, serenity and looks of a Buddha, chipped away at the stones day after day, week after week, for months and years. His dedication and meticulous craftsmanship have resulted in stonework that is nothing short of amazing, full of life and energy’.
Fusion of styles and colours
The furniture at Xanadu is a beautiful blend of Arab, British, and African influences, reflecting the cultural melting pot that Zanzibar is famous for. Each piece is a mix of hard and soft elements, decked in the vibrant and eclectic colours that Africa is celebrated for. This fusion of styles and colours brings out the essence of all these cultures, creating an atmosphere that is both rich in heritage and brimming with energy.
At Xanadu, every detail has been thoughtfully considered to ensure that guests can feel the energy and soul of the place. The retreat offers a unique and immersive experience that allows visitors to connect with nature and appreciate the craftsmanship that has brought Xanadu to life.
Similarly, the woodwork at Xanadu was done entirely by hand, without the use of machines. We purchased old dhow boats, dismantling them to create arched window frames that vary in size, following the natural curves of the boats. This painstaking process has resulted in unique and beautiful frames that add to Xanadu’s charm. The restaurant floors were also hand-cut and laid out with precision and care.
